If you name your band after a bird, you’ve already got my attention. Common Birds, a buzzing indie outfit from Fort Collins, Colorado, cites some of my all-time favorites – The Walkmen, Sebadoh, Modest Mouse, and Yo La Tengo – as their inspirations.
The first single I heard from them, Outta Here, immediately brings to mind the lush and dreamy vibes of Galaxie 500. It’s partly due to the intimate, moody vocals, but also the hazy atmosphere that perfectly captures a sense of nostalgia. Listening to it, I’m transported back to my time in the U.S., wandering through small towns in Washington and Oregon.
So far, Common Birds have released four singles featuring the same artwork.
Their latest release, “If Only That Were True” – a true gem of a song, full of depth and soul. It’s the kind of music that feels pure and heartfelt, made for those who appreciate timeless sounds that resonate deeply.
This morning, I woke up to the season’s first snowfall. It was that quiet, slow snow that blankets the city and brings a sense of peace. As I watched it fall, this song was playing, and it felt warm and comforting. The dreamy synths, melancholic atmosphere, and emotional weight of the track created a moment of calm.
Personally, I hope the band releases a full album soon – ideally before January or February – so I can immerse myself in their music during the heart of winter.
